The Peninsula of Florida is delineated from an Original Spanish Draught (done in a very large scale) entirely different from any extant, it was found on board a Spanish Ship taken by Admiral Frankland in the former war. The Situation of Cabo del Canaveral is determined by several astronomical observations made by officers in both the British and Spanish Navys. The several points of the Bahama Islands as well as the soundings are adjusted by the observations of several British navigators. [In Jefferys (T. engraver) A general topography of North America and The West Indies. fol. London, for R. Sayer & T. Jefferys, 1768. no. 67] From the back of the map: The very rare 1st edition of Jefferys chart of the peninsula of Florida and the Bahama Islands. Much information on shoals, harbors, inlets, rivers, lagoons, and soundings. The Bahama are especially shown with great detail as to charting the water directly around the islands. An excellent map in a rare state. |
