Abstract/Description: The increasing prevalence of obesity is a major public health concern since it is associated with many chronic diseases and imparts a large economic burden in the United States (U.S). Obesity is marked as a state of chronic low grade inflammation that can lead to insulin resistance. The objective of this study was to examine if Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-α) serum levels were higher in obese individuals or overweight individuals. A cross-sectional study was conducted that included a total of 68 men and postmenopausal women between the ages of 45 to 65 years who were overweight (n=26) or obese (n=42). Measurements of each participant’s BMI were done and fasting venous blood was collected to assess TNF-α serum levels. An ELISA kit was used to measure the serum levels of TNF-α. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment correlations (r), where the degree of the relationships between BMI and TNF-α serum production was assessed to determine the relationship between variables. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (SD). Significance was accepted at p≤0.05. There were no significant difference between the TNF-α serum levels in the group of overweight individuals 0.86 ± 0.25(pg/ml) and the obese group: 0.92 ± 0.42 (pg/ml). Numerically speaking there were 6% differences between overweight verses obese individuals. Our findings, albeit not significantly, support the notion that TNF-α plays a role in the development of insulin resistance due to obesity.
