It was appreciation of this book and curiosity about its background that led the writer of this paper to select Armstrong Sperry and his writing as her subject. The writer should, perhaps, have begun with an investigation of biographical sources. If she had done so, she would have discovered gaps in information and would have gotten in contact with Sperry himself sooner. Also a knowledge of the experiences connected with each book must surely have added to her enjoyment in reading it. However, that was not the procedure used. Having established through standard bibliographies what books Sperry had written, the writer read them in haphazard order. After consulting the available biographical material, she wrote Armstrong Sperry in care of his most recent publisher, Winston in Philadelphia. In a most cordial reply, which arrived only five days later, Sperry answered her questions about his life, the source of his background materials for recent books, and his work in progress. He added several interesting paragraphs giving his philosophy of writing. Mr. Sperry's letter added greatly to the information gathered from other sources. The first chapter of this paper presents the salient facts of Sperry's life"--Introduction.

An obituary notice gave the number of her publications as one hundred books 'under own name and pseudonyms.' The pseudonyms--Timothy Hay, Golden MacDonald, Juniper Sage--represented, according to Miss Brown, 'clear-cut writing personalities and distinct styles' differing from each other and from Margaret Wise Brown so greatly that, from the first draft of a book, it was perfectly clear to her just which one of her literary personalities was doing the writing. This remarkable statement, the discrepancy in the count of her books, and a curiosity about a writer who could produce in a life span of little more than forty years such a great number of books, be it seventy or one hundred, are the motivations for this paper. Its purpose is to compile from various sources a literary biography of Margaret Wise Brown and to establish the canon of her writing"--Introduction.

"Norman Mailer has often been criticized on the grounds implied above. His naturalistic style has evoked revulsion, his political beliefs ridicule and reproof, and the sensational quality of his material the accusation of dishonesty. Confronted by the writings themselves, and by Mailer's nonfiction essays on art and politics, such reactions appear irrelevant. The procedure for this study has been to identify, read, and analyze all available material written by Burke Davis. Because of the few references to Mr. Davis in conventional biographical tools the predominant biographical material in this paper is from original sources. Correspondence with Mr. Davis and his wife assured this writer of their complete cooperation and assistance in making his study. Several extensive questionnaires, as well as a number of letters, secured information and facts unavailable from any other source. Mr. Davis was gracious enough to answer all queries with exceptional frankness, candor, and insight, and he has been freely quoted in this paper. The purpose of the paper is to provide a sketch of the life of Burke Davis, to survey the critical aspects of his writing to date, and to present a bibliography of his works"--Introduction.

This is due to the fact that the librarian is responsible for the accessibility of the knowledge found within the library's collections, and that in carrying out his responsibility, he must utilize bibliography. As one authority has put it, bibliography leads the inquirer, 'through channels as well-defined as are the entrances to harbors, to the particular record or records of communication which contain the information or other matter which he seeks.' Because it was felt that she needed practice in acquiring skill in this 'art of communication,' the writer decided to undertake as a graduate paper a study which would involve bibliographic investigation, a study in the form of a bio-bibliography. In choosing an author as the subject of the bio-bibliography, it was necessary to select one who might be claimed as being within the province of librarianship. Miss Daphne du Maurier, the prominent English novelist, was chosen as the subject of the paper for several reasons"--Introduction.

In addition she served on the original committee of selection for the Book-of-the-Month Club for twenty-five years. Family and academic life in the middle-West, and experiences garnered during her travels abroad are reflected in many of her stories, but the major portion of her writings is concerned with Vermont and New England. The inquiry revealed that not only was Mrs. Mayer willing to make available an appreciable amount of unpublished material, but that Mrs. Mayer's younger brother, Mr. Edward Gibbons, also was prepared to provide considerable information for such a project. At Mrs. Mayer's suggestion, this writer also solicited the assistance of the writer James Warner Bellah, whose subsequent letter has contributed substantially to the available information. The problem, then, was to determine a convenient and concise form for presenting the details of Gibbons' life and writings in such a way that the information would be readily accessible. After a study of various types of reference works, the writer elected to use the form of a bio-bibliography in preparing this professional paper in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's degree in Library Science. The first of three parts is a brief biography of Floyd Gibbons, in which the main events of his life are described and discussed with respect to their effect upon what Gibbons wrote. The second is a report and summary of the reactions of the reading public at large and of various reactions of the reading public at large and of various critical reviewers to Floyd Gibbons' books. Following these is a bibliography of works by and about Floyd Gibbons, with an introduction which explains fully its contents and organization"--Introduction.

Miss Latham was chosen as the subject of this paper, first, because of great admiration for her and her works, and, secondly, because of her stature as an author of young people's biographies. Although she has been a prolific writer of drama, she is now best known for her contributions to young people's literature, and only this phase of her work is considered in this study. The writer's interest in Spanish literature, acquired through previous courses, suggested the possibility of choosing a Spanish author who would be fairly well known to English-speaking readers and who had had some works translated into English. José Ortega y Gasset fulfilled these conditions, and a study of his life and works seemed to this writer a challenging topic. The reading of several of Ortega's works had aroused an interest in his ideas and a desire to know more about his personality and his literary works. The results of this investigation are given in the body of this paper, a bio-bibliographical study. The first section is a brief account of the life of Ortega y Gasset, with emphasis on the events which influenced his thinking and writing. The second section deals with the philosophical concepts of Ortega as expressed in his books. The third section is a bibliography of his works which have been translated into English, giving the theme of each, an indication of the reaction of critics, and a listing of the sources of criticisms. Following is an Appendix listing Ortega's works in Spanish, excluding articles in periodicals and magazines"--Introduction.

In accomplishing this the United States has fostered the work of many foreign writers and artists, who have blended their own heritage and culture with modern American life. Among these foreign born author-artists of children's books is Kate Seredy, whose creative work in such books as The Good Master and The White Stag gives her a rightful place among the outstanding artists of this age. The purpose of this paper is to show how her early Hungarian life and her later absorption into American society influenced her stories and pictures to contribute to the vast wealth of children's books. This will be done by a brief biography of her life and a discussion of her works"--Introduction.

As a result an author who is not well-known or recognized in literary circles, but one who has afforded much pleasure and enjoyment to the popular reading public, was chosen. This author, Rose Franken, was selected for three reasons. The first was that, her personal life having been a thing apart and biographical material thus limiter, the promise of finding and relating fugitive material about her offered a challenge. The second was that, her plots and themes having been repeated often, the possibility of finding their connections seemed a worthy endeavor. The third was that, Franzen having been published in book separate and omnibus editions under similar titles, the discovery of the relationships between the original printing and omnibus editions was held of interest and use. Consideration of her literary output has been limited to works printed in book form, with the exception of one novel, Claudia, the Diary of a Marriage, which, although it has not appeared between hard covers, was included because it is the concluding volume of the 'Claudia' stories"--Introduction.

The librarian should familiarize himself with the background of the award-making bodies and should find out as much as possible about the quality and desirability of their selections. Careful attention should be given to the critics and other literary authorities in order to insure the most worthwhile and suitable additions to the collection. Such an endeavor is the purpose of this paper, which specifically is a consideration of the Pulitzer Prize novels covering the period from 1944 through 1959. The scope of the appraisal was limited to this period because there is a previous work, a master's thesis by Charlotte Georgi of the University of North Carolina, which treated the field of fiction from the first award through 1943. Thirteen prize-winners have been chosen during this period, there having been three years in which no award was given. Since fiction is in great demand, in many libraries, it was decided that a study of the most prestigious award given for fiction in this country would be both interesting and valuable to the writer and that it would be somewhat of an aid to public librarians in their selections for this area of the collection. That is, it is hoped that the appraisal of these novels will furnish standards for selecting fiction"--Introduction.

Miss Godden writes with sensitivity and subtlety of the thoughts, emotions and values which children cannot express for themselves. For these reasons, Rumer Godden seemed to be an author well worth studying as a subject for a bio-bibliography. This choice was confirmed by checking the Standard Catalog for High School Libraries, the Standard Catalog for Public Libraries, the Fiction Catalog, and the Bookman's Manual which list a generous number of her works. The decision to do a bio-bibliography was made in order to obtain skill in bibliographic research as an essential tool for the librarian. Howard presents a particularly interesting case, for his more serious and well thought-out plays rank with the better realistic dramas of his time, while the less conscientious efforts show a relationship to the immature playwriting of the previous generation. Whether or not Howard alone would be considered a cardinal figure in the development of the American drama might be open to question. Show moreThe First Book of Airplanes, published in 1944 under the title The First Book of Flying and since revised three times, is the initial book issued by Franklin Watts, Inc., as a part of the prolific 'First Book Series.' Since that time, 99 more titles have been issued, bringing the total to 100. Although the publisher indicated 100 as the official number of books in the series as of May 15, 1959, this writer actually located 108 books published by Franklin Watts, Inc., with the title The First Book of ---. However, since the publisher includes only 100 titles in the series, the list of 99 titles in the Franklin Watts, Inc. catalog of books for spring and summer 1959 and 1 title listed in the Franklin Watts catalog in the Publishers' Trade List Annual and not included in the other list were chosen as the group of books to be discussed in this paper. The purpose of this extensive series is 'to create a group of individual non-fiction titles which would give a child both information and understanding on a subject when he first becomes interested in it.' The present writer intends to examine thoroughly the 'First Book Series' in terms of the claims made by the publisher and to determine by examination of a selected number of individual titles and analysis of reviewers' reactions the extent to which these claims are justified.
