Stereotype threat refers to the fear of confirming negative stereotypes about one’s self either through their own actions or through judgment by others (Steele, 1997). Stereotype threat may hinder the achievement of people who strongly identified with domains in which the stereotypes apply (Steele, 1997). Show moreStereotype threat refers to the fear of confirming negative stereotypes about one’s self either through their own actions or through judgment by others (Steele, 1997). Stereotype threat may hinder the achievement of people who strongly identified with domains in which the stereotypes apply (Steele, 1997). Our studies focused on alleviating the negative effects of stereotype threat by exposing African-Americans to in-group, stereotype-defying scholars. We designed two studies: an in-lab (within subject design study) and an online (between subject design study). Both studies only used African-American participants. In the online study, participants were randomly selected to watch a short video presentation about White scholars and their academic achievements, or about Black scholars and their academic achievements in the online study. In the in-lab study, participants watched both videos. We hypothesized that compared to those who only watched the White scholars presentation, African-American participants who only watched the Black scholars presentation would rate the academic game a higher percentage of their score. We predicted that exposure to stereotype defying in-group role models would increase African-American participants’ confidence in their own academic abilities.
