Missouri Hymns is a play comprised of stage poems that blur the boundaries between poetry and prayer as well as theatre and worship. These poems are often narrative. The speaker, primarily June, and at times her mother, embody the poems and create a living approach to poetry. Or as the character Holy Spirit declares in her opening monologue, a kind of “living prayer.” The staging of poems provides a new intimate dimension of tonality, transforming the traditional relationship of reader and poem into one of a viewer and poem. This work is relevant to understanding how art and spirituality effortlessly co-exist.
