Very little biographical data concerning Tom Person is available in print. To supplement the information in Who's Who Monthly Supplement, in Mrs. Person's scrapbook, and on book jackets, this writer contacted the Person family, a profitable experience both from the standpoint of information obtained and from the personal satisfaction of knowing fine people. Friends of the Persons also were most helpful in furnishing further details about the family. Letters from a plantation owner, a lawyer, a newspaper columnist, an educator, and other interesting friends included pertinent biographical and critical data. The biographical section treats Person's early years, his literary apprenticeship as a writer of short stories, his family, his friends, and his work"--Introduction.

Incidental treatment is given to the illustrator's qualifications and the general use of art work in the volumes. The summation attempts to show the success or failure of these volumes about Southern rivers to meet the criteria outlined for the series in the prospectus and to indicate some basic changes in the contents, the variety of reviewers' attitudes through the years, and the importance of these books as Southern regional writing.

This medium was chosen, because the writer is not qualified to analyze critically each book as to its importance. The procedure followed in this paper was: (1) to obtain background information relative to the Southern Author Award, (2) to gather up-to-date information from available sources, or from the award winners themselves, in order to write a sketch of each author, (3) to evaluate the Southern Authors' Award books through their reviews in Book Review Digest, and (4) to summarize the findings of this paper. Two Florida State University Library School Master's Studies were of aid to this writer in determining the form for the presentation of the data"--Introduction.

Tools that were useful in compiling the list were Essay and General Literature Index, Fiction Catalog, International Index to Periodicals, Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, and Short Story Index. Next all of the works of Caroline Gordon and all of the articles written about her works that were available were read. Critical reviews of her writings were traced through Book Review Digest and the original reviews were examined with care. Chapter I gives a sketch of Caroline Gordon's life; Chapter II discusses the novels of Miss Gordon; and Chapter III discusses her short stories and critical articles. A brief summary evaluates her works as adjudged by critics; and a bibliography of sources consulted concludes the paper"--Introduction.

To secure this objective, the state uses "teacher certification" as one means of attempting to guarantee that each child's education is guided and directed by professionally trained and qualified teachers"--Introduction.

In the course of examination of the journal some exercises in patience were performed; i. e., a listing of all contributors, the number of the contributions that each made and the volumes in which these contributions appeared; and a chart showing the contents of each volume; i. e., the number of the different types of essays included, and the number of poems, short stories, and book reviews published. These, as of possible interest to someone other than this writer, will appear in Appendix I and Table I, respectively"--Introduction.

"Katharine Anne Porter, since the appearance of her first work, Flowering Judas, in 1930, has achieved a place of distinction among American writers. It has been said of her that 'Few persons have built so solid a reputation on so small a published output.' With the emergence of Miss Porter as a figure of importance on the literary horizon, it seems fitting to make readily accessible for those who might be interested a list of works by her and works about her. The bibliography which has been...

With the emergence of Miss Porter as a figure of importance on the literary horizon, it seems fitting to make readily accessible for those who might be interested a list of works by her and works about her. The bibliography which has been undertaken to achieve this consists of two parts: an annotated bibliography of works by her and a checklist of works about her. In each case the bibliography is as complete as available materials permit"--Introduction.
