In the opinion of David D. Boyden, who succeeded him as chairman of California's music department, Bukofzer 'had no peer in the use of the resources of a large library or in a command of bibliography throughout the whole range of music scholarship.' For him, 'If the history of music is to have more than an antiquarian interest and significance, it must be seen as a history of musical styles, and the history of styles in turn as a history of ideas.' Such was Bukofzer's approach to Music in the Baroque Era, his contribution to the monumental Norton History of Music. [...] To supplement Bukofzer's bibliography, within the time limits set by him, this paper brings together an annotated bibliography of materials in the baroque period. It is limited to books and dissertations of more than seventy-five pages in length which have appeared since the publication of Bukofzer's book in 1947"--Introduction.
