Geology and surface topography of the basin is controlled by sediments of Upper Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Quaternary age. In the portion of the basin south of the Cody Scarp, the Middle and Upper Miocene sediments have been eroded and the surface elevations are much lower than the northern upland. The Florida Aquifer is the principal source of ground water for the St. Marks basin. The major producing zone of the aquifer is comprised of limestones of Upper Eocene to Lower Miocene age. Overlying younger sediments serve as confining units throughout the northern half of the basin. Hydrologically, the aquifer is more transmissive near the St. Marks River. Water levels are generally higher in the recharge area in the northern portion of the basin with flow paths generally towards the springs and discharge areas near the Gulf of Mexico. Recharge is predominantly from local rainfall although some ground water is being contributed from the adjacent basin to the north"--Abstract.

An analysis will be made of the present geography programs in the Florida public junior colleges to determine their orientation. This analysis will be concerned with the development of geography in the curriculum rather than with methods of instruction. A study of the catalogs of the various institutions plus information gathered through questionnaires constitute the main basis of analysis. Taking into consideration the objectives of general education, the objectives of the junior colleges, and the objectives of geography, the writer hopes to offer suggestions and recommendations which will make a useful contribution to the concurrent achievement of these objectives in Florida"--Introduction.

Show moreIn working with the disabled and/or handicapped person it is necessary to consider all aspects of social functioning if realistic goals are to be reached in the rehabilitation process. It is recognized that if the family can give interest and support to that member of the family who is disabled and/or handicapped, and agrees to participate in rehabilitation planning that the effect will be helpful. The dichotomy of this study sample is made between those patients living alone and those patients living with some member of their family. The null hypothesis of this study is that there are no differences between the observed and expected frequencies on eleven items of descriptive, social, and clinical information as revealed in the distribution of data for thirty-four adult physically disabled and/or handicapped patients who live with some member of their family and thirty-six adult physically disabled and/or handicapped patients who live alone, which could not occur by chance.

The Child Guidance Clinic serving Dade County opened for service in January, 1948, and the records were examined from that date through December, 1958. The hypothesis of this study is that there is an age, sex, and/or referral source pattern revealed in the distribution of cases opened during an 11-year period at the Dade County Child Guidance Clinic, Miami, Florida, and that there are no differences in these patterns between the first 5 years and the last 5 years of the Clinic's 11-year existence. To do this, population figures for the district were distributed by age, race, and county. A sample of hospital admissions was then drawn, and distributed by age, race, and county of admission. The findings of the study are based upon comparisons between the population and the hospital sample, in this manner. It was thought that such findings would be of interest to the hospital, as a public facility, in evaluating the service to its constituents"--Introduction.

More recently, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers have focused attention upon after care for the discharged hospitalized patient. This study concerns itself with the use of after care services by the Veterans Administration Hospital's patients. The focus is on the veterans referred for after care to the Hospital Outpatient Clinic and the Mental Hygiene Clinic upon discharge from the hospital. The purpose of this study was to determine similarities and differences of those veterans.

Variables to be studied include: Presenting problem, age differences in marital partners, length of marriages, number of children, referral source, and person making application. The recent literature with regard to waiting lists has been reviewed and the findings incorporated in this study. The need for reexamining agency policies and procedures regarding applicants on the waiting list is recognized. It is believed that this study will provide a basis for such an evaluation"--Introduction.

At the Veterans Administration Hospital, Coral Gables, Florida, the economic, social and military factors of 50 patients referred to Social Work Service were compared with those of 50 patients who left the hospital without needing help with discharge planning. Records were kept concerning the number and type of interviews which the social worker had with the fifty patients and/or their family members in order to effect their discharge. The diagnoses and length of stay of these 100 patients were tabulated for the purpose of comparison also. It is hoped that this information will be of value in the future in improving discharge planning techniques, in reducing length of hospital stay for greater utilization of beds, and in obtaining the ultimate in rehabilitation for such patients"--Introduction.

Show moreIn eight chapters this study analyzes the religious experiences of blacks in Florida between 1565 and 1906. The first three chapters concentrate on the period from the founding of St. Augustine to the beginning of Radical Reconstruction. Because understanding the religious experiences of black Floridians during the nineteenth century requires a grasp of the nature of cultural change in the preceding century, Chapter 1 outlines the colonial moorings of the history of black Floridians. A denomination-by-denomination treatment of slave religion between 1822 and 1861, found in Chapter 2, reveals that the modal public worship setting for most Florida slaves, regardless of denomination, was racially mixed, white-controlled churches in which black members were generally relegated to special pews, galleries, and other spatial restrictions. Chapter 3 throws light on the murky Civil War years during which black religious assertion began to be felt. Once freedom came, the desires of black Christians for churches and pastors of their own, already visible throughout the slavery era, were made manifest. The subsequent four chapters discuss the central role of emergent independent black churches in the economic, political, and social development of Florida's black population during the first four decades after emancipation. One chapter each is devoted to the A.M.E. Church, other Methodists, and Baptists. The remaining denominations (such as Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Catholics, and Lutherans) are treated in a single chapter. Finally, Chapter 8 broadly interprets the role of religion in Afro-American cultural change, focusing on the centrality and persistence of possession-like ritual behavior and spanning over three hundred forty years.

- Abstract/Description

There is a general lack of evaluations of college counseling programs. This is attributed to difficulties encountered in attempts to undertake evaluation, one source of difficulty being the uniqueness of the couseling problem of each student. Nevertheless, leaders in the field of personnel work feel that there is a distinct need for evaluation and make an effort to encourage further research of this type.
