- Creator

Earle, William S., Murray, Stewart, Florida State University
- Abstract/Description

There is a general lack of evaluations of college counseling programs. This is attributed to difficulties encountered in attempts to undertake evaluation, one source of difficulty being the uniqueness of the couseling problem of each student. Nevertheless, leaders in the field of personnel work feel that there is a distinct need for evaluation and make an effort to encourage further research of this type.

Show moreThe problem of finding a suitable instrument for projecting, or influencing the projection of an organized guidance program for the Florida State University Demonstration School is an outgrowth of at least three areas of personal observation and experience of the writer. First, it is a generally accepted fact that students are either graduating or leaving schools each year, in every county of every State in the United States, without the benefit of proper guidance or plans for the future. Second, as one who has taught in the public schools of this State, the writer is convinced that no individual can do a conscientious job of "teaching" unless he is an active, enthusiastic, and cooperative participant in an active, functioning guidance program within the school involved. Third, as a graduate student of the seminary and Florida State University, the writer is convinced of the need for a more adequate teacher-training program. This conversation has come about through studies in the field of education, wide reading and further study of professional opinion in the field of guidance, and observation of the "finished product" at work and as they express their ideas (?), attitudes (?) and philosophies (?) of education.

This study investigates the basic factors affecting the choice between the primary types of lodging establishments--hotels and motels. An attempt is made to find any existing relationship between the various physical, aesthetic, and economic qualities of representative establishments and the income, occupation or profession, education, geographic origin, and other pertinent factors which may be used to classify the different segements of the traveling public. Attitudes and mental associations held by the respondents are studied because 'they tell us not only what people will accept or reject but how something can be presented to them'"--Introduction.

The 1950 Census of Florida shows that only 24.3 per cent of all white residents of the state twenty-five years of age and over had completed high school. A study made by Marshall of the 1952 class at Leon County High School, Tallahassee, Florida, disclosed that 77.1 per cent of the students who entered the seventh grade in 1946 for the first time continued to graduation or one year after class had graduated. Show moreThe 1950 Census of Florida shows that only 24.3 per cent of all white residents of the state twenty-five years of age and over had completed high school. A study made by Marshall of the 1952 class at Leon County High School, Tallahassee, Florida, disclosed that 77.1 per cent of the students who entered the seventh grade in 1946 for the first time continued to graduation or one year after class had graduated. This is a higher percentage of graduating students than in many other high schools of the state. It is assumed desirable to have these young people stay in school the allotted time and to provide for them an educational program appropriate to their needs and to the needs of the society in which they live. Drop-outs, for one reason or another, are being thrust into an adult world to face adult problems before they have successfully coped with the problems of teenagers.

"Since 'religious adjustment is part of the person's total adjustment,' the writer believes that an investigation of the nature of the religious problems which trouble college students might be of some value to those who are concerned with the satisfactory life relationships of undergraduates. The writer also believes that a knowledge of the sources which students seek for help with their religious problems might contribute to a better understanding of students as they attempt to adjust to...
Show more"Since 'religious adjustment is part of the person's total adjustment,' the writer believes that an investigation of the nature of the religious problems which trouble college students might be of some value to those who are concerned with the satisfactory life relationships of undergraduates. The writer also believes that a knowledge of the sources which students seek for help with their religious problems might contribute to a better understanding of students as they attempt to adjust to encountered difficulties. Consequently, the present investigation was undertaken to discover the nature of the religious problems of undergraduate students at Florida State University and to determine the sources sought by students for help with such problems. No attempt was made to find the cause of any problem nor the reason for the absence of problems. No evaluation of the effectiveness of the counseling which students indicated they had received was attempted"--Introduction.
