"It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to explore some of those books included in several literary selection tools in order to determine whether they present the needs of children and the satisfaction of those needs in terms of experiences showing developmental values of a social and ethical nature. To recognize that a certain youngster needs more self-confidence, to give him a book in which the hero is beset by the same situation and overcomes it, and then to sit back with the calm...

To recognize that a certain youngster needs more self-confidence, to give him a book in which the hero is beset by the same situation and overcomes it, and then to sit back with the calm expectation of seeing a miracle wrought would be optimistic to the point of simple-mindedness. All that the librarian can do is to present the book to the child in the hope that he will absorb some help from his reading and thus be encouraged to solve his problems successfully"--Introduction.

"Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and presently residing in Aspen, Colorado, Carl Jonas has located four of his five novels as well as his two published short stories in the Middle West. Mr. Jonas has written five novels published since 1945, when his first novel appeared. He has written book-length fiction exclusively since that time and it is as a novelist, somewhat regional, then, that we shall regard him. The purpose of this paper is to give a sketch of the life of Carl Jonas, to make a survey of...

The history of music education in America shows that a variety of activities have been, and still are, included in the public school music program. Show moreThe history of music education in America shows that a variety of activities have been, and still are, included in the public school music program. The emphasis which has been placed on the various media of music in the schools has shifted from time to time, just has the concepts of general education have changed. At one time the important thing in teaching music was teaching singing; the music class became, in fact, a "singing class." A little later orchestras became a prominent part of the music education program. Still later a great emphasis was placed upon brass bands. As the instrumental program became stronger and more active the vocal program seemed to be forced somewhat into the background. Just at the time the proponents of vocal music were beginning to bewail their fate, a new interest began to develop in the music education program, that being an interest in "a capella" choirs. Today our schools have been able to coordinate the work of the various media into a well balanced program of music education-- one which affords opportunities in both instrumental and vocal music.

"But what of those who are just coming into the foreground, just now in the view of the public's eye? Should not their work be organized and presented in some usable and available form, so that one may more readily and more clearly see their development and growth as literary figures. The writer of this paper is attempting to present one young poet in this manner, trying in a cursory way to trace his development from a student-poet to a mature poet of full literary standing, and endeavoring...

Should not their work be organized and presented in some usable and available form, so that one may more readily and more clearly see their development and growth as literary figures. The writer of this paper is attempting to present one young poet in this manner, trying in a cursory way to trace his development from a student-poet to a mature poet of full literary standing, and endeavoring in as complete a manner as possible to bring together an annotated listing of all his published works in such a way as to show his subjects, the forms of expression and the themes that he employs in his writings. The paper itself is not meant to be a conclusive study of the man and his works, but instead is meant to be a beginning guide for those who someday will want to make such a study"--Introduction.

Since the writer of this paper is a Chinese girl who has appreciated the opportunity to live and study in America for the past six years, she is especially interested in suggesting adequate materials for use in America in motivating a better understanding of China. The compilation of such a bibliography has been undertaken as a step in achieving the good will and better understanding of English-speaking peoples in relation to China. As a result of discussion with Mrs. Sara K. Srygley, formerly Consultant in Library Service, Florida State Department of Education, and an examination of an available bibliography of books for high school libraries, it has been ascertained that there is a need for such a list"--Introduction.

In connection with the development of this list, an analysis has been made of materials available for evaluation. This analysis was made to determine the adequacy of library materials related to each continuing strand in Area I of the social studies program and to discover where production of additional materials is badly needed. Only the materials listed in current selection aids were considered for inclusion in the bibliography of library materials developed through this study"--Introduction.

"One of the many writers who have contributed to the 'Southern Literary Renaissance' of the past twenty-five or thirty years is a young Mississippi author, Thomas Hal Phillips, whose first novel was written in lieu of a Master's thesis about 1948 and was published in book form in 1950. Since that time he has written four more novels, one of which has been published only in England. Since that time he has written four more novels, one of which has been published only in England. In general, these novels have been favorably received by the critics, several of whom have predicted that Mr. Phillips is on the threshold of what will prove to be a very notable career. Although he has been writing only about ten years, his achievement is already substantial. Since Mr. Phillips is already recognized as a worthy novelist and the indications are that his fame is rising rapidly, he seemed a suitable subject for a bio-bibliography. This study has been particularly interesting to the student because Mr. Phillips was born in, lives in, and writes about the region that is native to her as well as to him. Its purpose is to make available for future reference, biographical and bibliographical material which has hitherto not been available in any one place"--Introduction.

Very little biographical data concerning Tom Person is available in print. To supplement the information in Who's Who Monthly Supplement, in Mrs. Person's scrapbook, and on book jackets, this writer contacted the Person family, a profitable experience both from the standpoint of information obtained and from the personal satisfaction of knowing fine people. Friends of the Persons also were most helpful in furnishing further details about the family. Letters from a plantation owner, a lawyer, a newspaper columnist, an educator, and other interesting friends included pertinent biographical and critical data. The biographical section treats Person's early years, his literary apprenticeship as a writer of short stories, his family, his friends, and his work"--Introduction.
