- Giulia Kortischoner apologizes to Mia Hasterlik for not telling her about the polio diagnosis sooner. Giulia also tells Mia about the work she has been doing in Switzerland and says she is very much looking forward to living in the United States with her family once again. She ends the letter with the sad news that Paul Hasterlik, Mia's father and Giulia's grandfather, had died in 1944 most likely in May. He actually died 7 March 1944 in Theresienstadt concentration camp of influenza.
